AZ-900 is worth it if you are new to cloud or work alongside technical teams, and usually skippable if you already work hands-on in Azure. It costs about two weeks of study and one exam fee, it never expires, and it gives you the vocabulary every later Azure exam assumes. What it does not do is prove you can administer Azure.

Who gets real value from it

  • Career changers and students. It gives you a structured map of cloud concepts and Azure services and a credential that shows you made the effort. Microsoft also notes you may be eligible for ACE college credit after passing.
  • Non-technical roles near cloud work. Sales, project and product managers, procurement and finance people who work with cloud teams. The governance and cost management domain is directly useful in those jobs.
  • Developers and IT people new to Azure specifically. If you know another cloud or on-premises infrastructure, AZ-900 is a quick way to learn Azure's names for things before attempting AZ-104.

Who can skip it

  • People already administering Azure. If you create VNets, assign roles and manage storage accounts at work, AZ-900 will mostly confirm what you know. Go to AZ-104, which is not gated on AZ-900.
  • Architects with real Azure experience heading for AZ-305.

There is no wrong answer here. The question is whether the two weeks are better spent on AZ-900 or on the first two weeks of AZ-104 preparation. Our guide to which exam to take first has a simple decision rule.

What it proves, and what it does not

AZ-900 tests whether you can describe cloud concepts, Azure architecture and services, and Azure management and governance. The verbs in the official skills outline are almost all "describe". It is a vocabulary and concepts exam.

That makes it a good signal of understanding and a weak signal of ability. Hiring for hands-on Azure roles usually looks for AZ-104 or demonstrable experience. Treat AZ-900 as a foundation, not a destination, unless your role only needs the foundation.

What it costs

  • Time: about two weeks for most beginners at under an hour a day. Our two-week AZ-900 plan lays it out.
  • Money: commonly US$99 in the United States, with regional pricing elsewhere and academic pricing for students. See Azure exam costs.
  • Upkeep: none. Fundamentals certifications do not expire.

If you decide to take it

Do not treat it as a formality. People who fail AZ-900 usually underestimated the governance, cost management and compliance content. Study the three domains from Microsoft Learn, then use practice questions that report your score per domain so you know which one is weak. Bottom line

Worth it as a foundation if you are new to cloud or work around cloud teams. Skippable if you already work in Azure, in which case AZ-104 is the better use of the same time. Either way it is cheap, quick and permanent, which is why it is such a common first Azure certification.

Frequently asked questions

Is AZ-900 enough to get a cloud job?

Rarely on its own. AZ-900 shows you understand cloud and Azure concepts, which helps for non-technical and entry roles, but technical hiring for Azure administration usually looks for AZ-104 or equivalent hands-on experience.

Can I skip AZ-900 and take AZ-104 directly?

Yes. AZ-900 is not a prerequisite for AZ-104. If you already work with Azure or another cloud day to day, going straight to AZ-104 is common.

Is AZ-900 hard?

It is a beginner-level exam, but people still fail it, usually by underestimating pricing, governance and compliance topics or by studying only from a single video the night before.

Does AZ-900 expire?

No. Microsoft Fundamentals certifications do not expire, so AZ-900 needs no renewal.
