Do Azure Certifications Expire? Renewal Rules Explained

It depends on the level. Fundamentals certifications do not expire. Associate, expert and specialty certifications expire after 12 months and must be renewed.

For the Azure track that means AZ-900 is permanent, while AZ-104 and AZ-305 need annual renewal. The good news is that renewing is free and considerably easier than the original exam.

What expires and what does not

• AZ-900, Azure Fundamentals. Does not expire. Microsoft states plainly that Fundamentals certifications do not expire. Pass it once and it stays on your transcript.
• AZ-104, Azure Administrator Associate. Expires 12 months after you earn it. The certification page lists a renewal frequency of 12 months.
• AZ-305, part of Azure Solutions Architect Expert. Expert certifications follow the same annual renewal rule as associates.

How renewal actually works

The renewal process is not a second sitting of the original exam. It is deliberately lighter:

3. It is unproctored and open book. No camera, no locked-down environment, and you can consult documentation while taking it.
4. You get unlimited attempts within your eligibility window. You only need to pass once before your expiration date.
5. It is shorter than the original exam, and focused on recent technological and industry updates rather than re-testing the entire skill outline.

Passing extends your certification one year from the expiration date, not one year from when you took the assessment. Renewing early therefore costs you nothing in duration.

The six-month window is the part to remember

You can take the renewal assessment at any point during a six-month eligibility window before your certification expires. Microsoft sends an email when you become eligible, and your certification profile shows the renew button once the window opens.

This is where people get caught out. The window closes when the certification expires, and renewal is not available afterwards. If you miss it, the path back is retaking the full certification exam, which is proctored and not free. Setting a calendar reminder for the month your window opens is worth more than any study strategy here.

Passing AZ-900 gives you a credential that requires nothing further, ever. Passing AZ-104 starts a yearly obligation, small but recurring.
